Mathematics of Crossing Fibres

چکیده
This chapter looks at the problem of crossing fibres in diffusion MRI of the brain. Diffusion tensor imaging only gives us a single fibre direction, but fibres within single image voxels can adopt complex configurations. In particular, fibre crossings cause problems in diffusion tensor imaging that can result in failure of tractography or misleading indices of tissue integrity. Here we will study a variety of more sophisticated techniques that provide more information about the configuration of fibres within image voxels and resolve the orientations of crossing fibres.

Resolving crossing fibres using constrained spherical deconvolution: validation using DWI phantom data
Introduction A number of acquisition and reconstruction techniques have recently been proposed to extract the orientations of the white matter fibres within each imaging voxel from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data. Of these, the diffusion tensor model is currently the most commonly used, but is limited in that it cannot resolve crossing fibres [1]. Constrained spherical deconvolution (CSD)...
متن کاملDifferential reaction of crossing and non-crossing rat retinal axons on cell membrane preparations from the chiasm midline: an in vitro study.
In the rat, a small subpopulation of retinal ganglion cell axons forms a persistent projection to the ipsilateral half of the brain. These fibres originate almost exclusively from the ventrotemporal margin of the retina. In contrast to all other retinal axons they seem to be deflected from the midline of the optic chiasm and thereby led into the ipsilateral optic tract. In order to analyse the ...
متن کاملDTI measures in crossing-fibre areas: Increased diffusion anisotropy reveals early white matter alteration in MCI and mild Alzheimer's disease
Though mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate clinical state between healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), there are very few whole-brain voxel-wise diffusion MRI studies directly comparing changes in healthy control, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD subjects. Here we report whole-brain findings from a comprehensive study of diffusion tensor indices and probabilistic tractogra...
متن کاملTractography with multiple fibre directions
Performing fibre tracking in the brain using diffusion tensors is well established but fails in areas where the Gaussian density is a poor approximation of water molecule displacements in a voxel. We describe a new fibre tracking algorithm that uses mixtures of two Gaussian densities in these regions where the Gaussian model is poor. Results show that this algorithm allows tracking to continue ...
متن کاملImproved Fastness Properties of some Novel Triarylmethane Dyes on Acrylic Fibres
In this research, several series of triarylmethane dyes containing one or more terminal methoxy substituents with a variable tertiary amino groups have been used. These dyes have been applied to different substrates by using various methods including transfer printing and then their fastness properties were measured. These dyes shows exceptionally high light fastness (6-7) on acid modified poly...
